“So how was your day?”

I looked away from the lake to Finn as I asked my question. He was sitting across from me at our table at Robin’s. The reason I instantly chose this place when Finn offered it as an option was because they offered waterfront dining. Being able to sit out on the wrap-around deck to eat dinner while looking out at the lake was one of those experiences I’d never pass up.

“Busy,” Finn replied. “It’s just the nature of the beast at this time of year.”

“When does it slow down for you?” I wondered.

“We manage to stay steady year-round simply because we have clients from all over the globe, but it’s always worse through the summer months. I don’t technically need to go in every day because I’ve hired great employees, but the truth is that I enjoy what I do. So, I take advantage of the busy season to get my hands on a few extra projects,” he explained.

My face must have indicated I was deep in thought because Finn asked, “What’s that look for?”

“I was just thinking about our schedules,” I started. “I’m essentially unavailable to do anything from January through April. Once my load starts to lighten, yours picks up. The way it seems, we’ll probably need to take full advantage of any free time we have at the start of fall through the end of the year.”

Finn cocked an eyebrow and smirked.

“Your turn,” I ordered.

“My turn?”

“To tell me what that look means.”

Shaking his head through his laughter, he said, “Oh, it’s nothing. I was just thinking that I liked the fact that you were thinking that far ahead, and your future had me in it.”

Trying to play it off, I looked down at the table and said, “I mean if you’ve got other things to do—”

Finn cut me off by reaching across the table and curling his fingers around mine. “I like the plans you’ve made, Holly,” he said softly.

This was my opportunity. Maybe I was going to make a fool of myself and have to get through the rest of dinner with an awkward situation between us, but I wasn’t going to miss the chance.

“If you like those plans,” I teased, hinting at something much more fun.

Finn’s head tipped to the side as he assessed me carefully. Eventually, he asked, “What are you trying to tell me, Ms. Harris?”

Under the intense scrutiny of his stare, I bit my lip.

The silence stretched between us, neither one of us looking away, until we were pulled out of our moment by the waiter approaching with our entrees. Once he walked away, I looked down at the plates of food and declared, “These look delicious.”

“Yeah,” Finn agreed.

He didn’t add anything else.

That’s when I had to admit just how nervous I was about whether I’d done the right thing by being so forward with Finn. Because while the rest of dinner didn’t get awkward, he never brought it up again.

Somehow, I tried not to dwell too much on what may or may not happen later that night when Finn took me home.
